Vision of the centre

Improvement of health indicators in the region and reduction in morbidity profile of the population to a level below public health concern through research and collaboration.

Mission of the Centre

  1. To contribute to improve health through pursuit of excellence in research, advance training and partnership with control program.
  2. To provide inputs to the national and regional health programmes for enhancing the targeted outcome through basic, applied and operational research on diseases of public health importance.
  3. To support the public health functionary in the gap areas of technical expertise, laboratory facility and infrastructure and problem solving approaches to meet the challenges in control of endemic diseases as well as epidemics/ pandemics.
  4. Training of human resources to accelerate creation of health manpower and research capability in the region.

 

Significant / Notable Contributions

  1. New animal model for experimental filariasis research in mouse and mosquitos.
  2. Description of natural history (new clinical presentation, new immunogical markers and course of illness) of filariasis first ever in India.
  3. Successful Drug trial contributing towards Global Programme for Elimination of Filariasis (GPELF) and first trial in Asia on effective control of filariasis vector using Bacillus sphaericus.
  4. Identified a new variant of G6PD named as “G6PD-Orissa”.
  5. First evidence on additional use of Ivermectin for treatment of scabies.
  6. Mapping of iodine deficiency belts in Odisha and evidence on dietary practices and loss of iodine.
  7. Development of molecular tool for early diagnosis of cholera and entomological monitoring.
  8. Establishment of standardized laboratory and surveillance for emerging and endemic viral diseases and tuberculosis for public health support and research.
  9. Development of alternate regimens for filariasis to support GPLF and new tool for advocacy (first evidence of subclinical lymphatic pathology and reversal) and new strategy for mass-drug distribution in urban settings lacking formal health structure.
  10. Nutritional and morbidity profile of vulnerable primitive tribal groups (PVTG) and development of superior regimen for managing anaemia among adolescent girls.
